Born on February 21, 1934 in Brooklyn, NY, Gavin became enamored with the sport at a young age and boxed as an amateur.

In the late 1950s he spent time at both Stillman’s Gym and Gramercy Gym observing top cut men and trainers like Ray Arcel, Freddie Brown and Chickie Fererra. In 1968, he and Bob Jackson bought the Gramercy and ran it until 1990, with Jackson as trainer and Gavin handling cut duties for their boxers. From there they operated out of Gleason’s Gym. Gavin worked the corner for such stars as Lennox Lewis, Oscar De La Hoya, Vitali Klitschko, Micky Ward, Vito Antuofermo, Kevin Kelley, Junior Jones and Eric Harding. Throughout his career he built a reputation as one of boxing’s best cut men and was known for his calming presence in the corner.

Highly trusted and respected by the boxing community and affectionately known as “Uncle Al” to his fighters, he passed away at age 70 on July 8, 2004 from complications from a stroke.
