Born Henry William Gibbs on October 3, 1920 in London, England.
A former POW, following the end of WWII, he briefly boxed professionally before turning to coaching. By the late 1950s, he began what would become a 28-year refereeing career (1958-1986). Regarded as one of the top third men in the sport, he officiated fights involving Sugar Ray Robinson, Sonny Liston, Emile Griffith, Ken Buchanan, Barry McGuigan, John. H. Stracey, Jerry Quarry, Miguel Canto, Alfredo Escalera, Esteban DeJesus and Frank Bruno; and such notable bouts as Ali vs. London, Lopez vs. Kotey, Frazier vs. Bugner and Gomez vs. Zarate. As a judge, he scored memorable bouts such as Eubank vs. Benn, Chavez vs. Camacho, Fenech vs. Nelson and Leonard vs. Duran I. Gibbs was awarded OBE (Order of the British Empire) from the Queen for his service to boxing and charity work in 1980.
On November 15, 1999 he passed away at age 79.
