REMEMBERS CANASTOTA’S JOEY BASILIO

    CANASTOTA, NY – SEPTEMBER 2, 2020 - The International Boxing Hall of Fame mourns the loss of Canastota’s Joey Basilio, who passed away Monday (Aug. 31st) at age 83 in the Bishop Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Syracuse, where he had been a resident for six months.
























    “Joey Basilio was a talented fighter with tremendous determination who carried on the proud fighting tradition the Basilio family is known for,” said Hall of Fame Executive Director Edward Brophy. “The Hall of Fame joins the Village of Canastota and the boxing community in mourning the loss of one of our own.” 

    Born July 22, 1937, Joey followed his famous older brother, two-division world champion and Hall of Famer Carmen Basilio, into the boxing ring. He turned professional in 1957 and compiled a 25-3 (15 KOs) record. Under the guidance of Joe Netro and Johnny DeJohn, Basilio competed throughout the Northeast, including bouts in Totowa, Worcester, Scranton, Rochester, Buffalo, Troy, Syracuse and New York City. 

    The International Boxing Hall of Fame remembers the life and accomplishments of Joey Basilio.
